This letter is an official response to Lou Zablow, President of the Association of Survivors of Nazi Oppression. It is signed by Pierre Elliot Trudeau, then Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, on April 20, 1967. It mentions the Canadian hate propaganda law.
Lou Zablow, Founding Member of the Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre
Lou Zablow was born in Lodz, Poland. During the war, he was deported to many concentration camps including Auschwitz, Sachsenhausen and Mauthausen. He survived the Holocaust and immigrated to Canada in 1949.
Lou co-founded the Association of Survivors of Nazi Oppression in Montreal with other Holocaust survivors. During the 1960’s, this association lobbied the government to amend the criminal code and prohibit hate propaganda in Canada.
The Board of the Association was the main founder of the Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre in 1979. The institution became the Montreal Holocaust Museum in 2017.
Low Zablow donated this document to the Museum in 2002.
