Film Screening: Giado – Holocaust in the Desert
Montreal Israeli Film Festival
October 30 – November 10, 2024 (Online)

The Montreal Holocaust Museum is proud to partner with the Montreal Israeli Film Festival to present the online screening of Giado: Holocaust in the Desert (2023), directed by Sharon Yaish and Golan Rise.

In this gripping 56-minute documentary, viewers are invited to explore a little-known chapter of the Holocaust that unfolded in North Africa. For the first time, Yosef Dadush opens the doors to his personal diary, locked away for seventy years, revealing the harrowing experiences endured by Jewish prisoners in the Giado concentration camp, located in the Libyan Desert during World War II. Through rare archival footage and poignant testimonies, this film sheds light on the tragic story of 2,600 Jews deported to Giado, the harshest of the North African labor camps, where 562 prisoners died from disease and malnutrition.

This moving documentary emphasizes the broader scope of the Holocaust, showcasing how the atrocities extended beyond Europe into the Muslim world. A limited number of online views are available for this important film, which will only be accessible during the festival dates.

Language: Hebrew, with English subtitles.
