Remembering Stories of Resistance
Holocaust survivors and their descendants invite Montrealers to participate in the Yom Hashoah commemoration to remember the history of the Holocaust and honour its legacy today. This year’s ceremony will focus on the remarkable and diverse stories of resistance during the Shoah. Despite facing persecution and genocide, Jewish people found extraordinary ways to maintain hope, preserve their humanity, continue religious practices, and attempt to prevent their killing.
From famous resistance efforts like the Warsaw ghetto uprising, to lesser-known examples like the creation of the Heart from Auschwitz or the Feigenbaum family’s religious resistance in the Lodz ghetto, Jewish stories of resistance during the Shoah are marked by their defiance, resilience, and bravery. Courageous non-Jews, many of whom are recognized as Righteous among the Nations, also resisted the Nazis by assisting their Jewish neighbours and coordinating efforts to save lives.

Yom Hashoah was declared Holocaust Memorial Day in Quebec in 1999 and in Canada in 2003.
