In honour of World Refugee Day, join us on June 25th at noon EST for a virtual discussion about Canadian refugee policies and their impacts on refugee claimants.
The discussion will be moderated by Rivka Augenfeld, a former refugee and a long-time advocate for refugee rights. She will be in discussion with Louis-Philippe Janard, who completed his doctoral thesis in law at the Université du Québec à Montréal on the detention of migrants in Canada. He has been part of the TCRI team as Protection Component Coordinator since October 2023. They will be joined by Sharry Aiken, law professor and founding academic director of the Graduate Diploma in Immigration and Citizenship Law at Queen’s University.
The speakers will explore the challenges faced by asylum seekers abroad and by refugees whose claims are heard in Canada. Through this discussion, we aim to deepen understanding of the realities and complexities of refugee protection in Canada.
This conversation is especially meaningful for the Montreal Holocaust Museum as during the Holocaust, countless Jews were denied refuge abroad as they attempted to flee Nazi persecution. Today, the Holocaust stands as one of history’s worst demonstrations of the devastating consequences of xenophobia and closed-door refugee policies.
Free reservations are required through Jlive.
This event is being run in partnership with the Table de Concertation des organismes au service des personnes Réfugiées et Immigrantes (TCRI).
