In honour of Pride Month, join us for a virtual screening of Dear Fredy by Rubi Gat. This film will be available with English and French subtitles.
Fredy Hirsch, an openly gay, German-born Jew, fled to the Czech Republic in 1935. When the Jews were deported to the Terezin Ghetto, Fredy was appointed head of the youth department, caring for 4,000 young people. Upon arrival in Auschwitz, he convinced the Germans to establish a daycare center for 600 children, where he provided them with their last moments of happiness. Fredy planned an uprising that never materialized, following his mysterious death—a mystery this film aims to uncover.
The film blends interviews, archival materials, and animation.
“Dear Fredy” won the Jury Prize at QFest in Houston, Texas, the Prix du Public at Vues d’en Face in Grenoble, and the Programmer’s Choice for Best Feature Film at the Fairy Tales Queer Film Festival in Calgary, Canada, 2020. It has been featured in over 50 festivals worldwide.
The film will be made available for those who have registered between June 16th to 23rd.
