(Event in French) Join us on January 19th for a virtual book talk at noon EST with Roger Fajnzylberg, who published his late father Alter Fajnzylberg’s personal diaries in the book, Ce que j’ai vu à Auschwitz : Les Cahiers d’Alter. Roger will be in conversation with Alexandre Bande, an expert on the history of the Holocaust and antisemitism.
Alter Fajnzylberg was imprisoned in Auschwitz-Birkenau from April 1942 to January 1945 and forced to join the Sonderkommando for eighteen months. The publication of his personal diaries is an exceptional contribution to the history of the Holocaust.
These previously unpublished writings were written in Polish upon his arrival in France, between the autumn of 1945 and the spring of 1946, and were then buried in a shoebox. It took decades for his only son, Roger, to unearth them, have them transcribed, translated, and contextualize them with the help of historian Alban Perrin.
This testimony is particularly unique given the rarity of Sonderkommando survivors, as the Nazis attempted to eliminate all direct witnesses to their mass killings.
