Edith Jakubowicz’s Deportation from Lodz to Auschwitz

Edith Jakubowicz was deported from the Lodz ghetto to the Auschwitz concentration camp in August 1944. She survived the Holocaust and returned to her aunt’s home in Lodz. Edith’s cousin gave an apartment to a non-Jewish Polish on the condition that Edith could stay in a room. This man was Olie Nitchak, a photographer who owned a studio. Edith found this photograph from the Lodz ghetto, probably taken by Olie during the war. To prevent it from being thrown away, she brought it with her when she immigrated to Israel in 1951. Edith later immigrated to Montreal in 1953.

Edith Jakubowicz donated this photograph to the Montreal Holocaust Museum in 2001.
